MARA TIMBO CAMP Mara, Kenia
MARA TIMBO CAMP
Mara Timbo Camp aims for high standards in accommodation, cuisine, service, wilderness experiences, game drives, and cultural knowledge. It is an upmarket exclusive camp offering superb holiday get-away in tranquillity and luxury.
It is located in world famous Masai Mara, where there is an abundance of animal and bird-life in the vast savannah. Every year in July, August, September and partly October, the great Migration of wildebeest will travel miles from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Masai Mara.
While you would love to be part of the 7th wonder of the world, the camp will offer you the most luxurious accommodation in style! Experience true Kenyan hospitality from our staff with friendly smiles and professional service.
Besides Migration Masai Mara is known for its abundance and diversity of wildlife and here you have the chance of spotting the “Big Five” – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino on one safari.
Mara Timbo Camp is ideally situated in the most untamed bush in the Western part of Masai Mara, near Oloololo escarpment, where the classical Africa movie “Out of Africa” was produced.
The Camp, directly in a loop of Mara River, offers its guests a perfect panoramic view of two huge herds of hippos from your bush pavilion as well as from the dining area.
The Camp is embedded in 300 acres of land, owned by a Masai landlord. The area allows walking safaris, beautiful sundowners, bush cuisines and night game drives.
The camp is accessible by road (5 hours drive from Nairobi) and twice a day by air from Nairobi
(Air Kenya, Safarilink and Fly 540) through Kichwa Tembo airstrip.
Flight time from Nairobi is only 45minutes.
From the Indian Ocean (like from Mombasa, Malindi or Diani Beach), airlines like Mombasa Air and Blue Sky are operating Kichwa Tembo daily, heading there within two hours.
The drive into the camp from the airstrip (35min) is already a safari on it’s own with various spottings of elephants, zebras, giraffes, baboons, antelopes and birdlife.
The beauty of the camp, besides its setting at the banks of Mara River, is its openness.
No fence is erected but the camp has enough askaris on guard outside the camp to keep animals within permitted proximity.
Mara Timbo Camp offers seven luxurious and spacious bush pavilions (each 45sqm) with en-suite bathrooms, tastefully decorated interiors, with warm blends of colour and unique furnishings.
The bush pavilions are all under grass thatched roofs, providing cool temperatures during the day.
The facilities in the bush pavilions include a large king size bed made out of local furniture under a mosquito net, a safe deposit for valuables, enough space for placing clothes, a writing table, a stand mirror, a bathroom with two double sinks, hot and cold water, flush toilet, 220/240volt power supply and amenities for use by the guests.
Facilities for recharging batteries are available. Guests should bring the required adapters.
Out on every tent’s deck, guests can overlook The Mara River. The private terrace is 110sqm wide with a dining area, a swing and a cosy sitting place for leisure time and romantic getaways.
Restaurant, Lounge & Bar and Gift shop
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served under the open African sky as long as the weather allows it.
Additionally, the Camp has three cosy restaurant islands which ensure maximum privacy to the guests.
To provide warmth to the cool Mara evenings, campfires are lit in front of these restaurant islands with sumptuous candlelit dinner as well as in front of the lounge.
The Lounge décor is tasteful with huge lounge chairs, artworks from local Masai Villages, with a well-stocked library. After the evening safari, pre-dinner drinks around the campfire are a delight with the resident naturalist entertaining and narrating stories about the local Masai tribe.
You can reminisce the day’s events as you watch the rekindling fire!
The Bar is set centrally located in the lounge area with the campfire ablaze, as our professional barman treats you to the most intriguing cocktails. Every cocktail on the list is challenging for him and strangely tastier than the previous one.
Souvenirs Guests are welcome to visit the camp’s well stocked gift shop located in a real Manyatta (a Masai hut) next to the lounge. Gift items include films, souvenirs, t-shirts, hats, Masai beadwork crafted by local Masai women.
Mara Timbo Camp Chef has vast experience in gourmet cuisine, ensuring that guests look forward to each and every meal. We offer a choice of three 3-course menus for lunch and dinner, one always vegetarian. All meals are Table d’hôte, but we are flexible to meet other special requests for favorite meals and dietary requirements, which will be catered for with utmost pleasure.
Personalized Butler Service
A personal butler is assigned to every bush pavilion during guests stay to ensure that service is provided from Food and Beverage Service, Bush Excursions, Special anniversaries and room service. The butlers are extensively trained to maintain and enhance the set luxury upmarket standards at Mara Timbo Camp.
Game drives are in customised Landcruisers or Land Rovers, with a capacity of 6 and comfortable photographic view of the wildlife. Two games drives are offered every day from dawn with the expertise of a professional, friendly and knowledgeable driver/guide. The guide will give you detailed information about the animals, species of birds, plants, the area, migration, and the local people. Every game drive will be a totally different experience due to the vast plains of the Masai Mara game reserve. The game drives are informative, exciting and flexible to meet your day’s schedule. On special cases, through your travel agency, exclusive use of vehicle can be organized at extra charges.
The experience of nature walks with the expert resident naturalist is exhilarating. The “little things” which were missed out on the 4 x 4 game drives will be sighted on foot and impeccable knowledge collected. It is most knowledgeable and memorable; you experience hands-on-feeling of the surroundings, animal footprints, droppings, wild flowers, plants and their medicinal or household use to the Masai tribe.
Sunsets over the Masai Mara are magical and truly romantic. The staff and driver-guide know where to escape for this special sundowners treat with house wines, champagne, cold beers… you cannot help but start planning the next trip.
Adventurous Night Game Drives
Unique experiences under moonlit skies, Night Game Drives are a must! Different from most other camps, Night Game Drives are allowed at Mara Timbo, since Mara Timbo Camp is not located within the National Park. Some of the animals are nocturnal and cannot be sighted during the day. Hyenas and jackals prefer to hunt during the night and sometimes the leopards and lion prides can be spotted. And of course Mara Timbo Camp’s direct neighbors, the hippos, come out at night for grazing on the vast plains surrounding the camp and can be spotted there.
Visits at a Masai Village
You cannot be in the Masai Mara without curiously having an urge to visit and experience the way of life of the most cultural tribe in Kenya. The villages are en-route from the airstrip or on the way back from the game drive. The guide will organize to drop you there and with the assistance of a local chief, take the informative tour around the Manyatta.
Breathtaking Balloon Safaris
Balloon safaris are the most breath-taking experience, not only during the great migration. The view is spectacular, tranquil and magical. Hot breakfast is cooked and served in the middle of nowhere an hour or so later after the exciting landing experience. A Balloon Safari can be organized at the camp with one of our cooperation’s partners.
